In the present day, digital artwork as we all know it’s dizzyingly immersive, drawing from optical and kinetic references in its creation of uncanny different worlds. It’s a motion that has been gathering steam for many years, the roots of which are actually being uncovered in a significant new exhibition on the Tate Fashionable.
Encompassing the interval from the Fifties to the start of the web period, and uniting over 70 artists, Electrical Goals celebrates classic tech artwork in all its mind-bending glory. From US artist Rebecca Allen’s experiments in movement seize and 3D modelling for a Krafwerk music video, to Eduardo Kac’s textual content poems created with Minitel machines, the exhibition delves into actions together with kineticism, cybernetics and abstraction as they started to take form.
Right here, too, are the beginnings of digital actuality, with Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss’s 1992 interactive set up inviting guests to distort their reflection on a pool of digital water. In the meantime, Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz Diez’s trippy transferring projections invite us right into a maze of colored traces, taking a disorientating deep-dive into the influence of science on artwork.
