Los Angeles-based artist Richard Hawkins offered the backdrop to Jonathan Anderson’s A/W 2024 menswear present for Loewe, seeing the home’s heartthrob muses – from Jamie Dornan and Josh O’Connor to Omar Apollo and Manu Rios – turn out to be the topic of his delirious, erotically-infused collages, which riff on modern movie star tradition. Their iPhone selfies, generally shirtless, have been mixed with Hawkins’ fixations, amongst them Roman statuary, French decadence and the gleaming hunks from Eighties teen magazines, and beamed onto screens recalling stained-glass home windows. On the finish of the runway, a set of work by the artist was deemed by Anderson as ‘the altar’.
Richard Hawkins x Loewe: ‘A breaking away from formality’
Hawkins’ vibrant works seem throughout the A/W 2024 assortment, adorning a model of Anderson’s Puzzle tote – an origami-like riff on the home’s signature purse which folds solely flat – or daubed throughout slouchy knitted jumpers and intricately caviar-beaded hoodies and sweatpants. They have been woven into a set which Anderson described as ‘a breaking away from formality and the thought of a single look’, evoking freewheeling teenage fashion and their poster-covered bedrooms (certainly, one layered look recalled the pile-up of garments that may be discovered on the ground).
‘Fashionable life has turn out to be a collage,’ the Northern Irish designer continued. ‘I’m this concept of iconography. It’s all about several types of validation… how we understand ourselves to the skin world. It’s a brand new psychology. What meaning sooner or later, I don’t know – however I feel it may be thrilling.’
