Erica the shark, Bonnie the hippo, and Monica the gorilla are simply a number of the snarling fang-toothed creations by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius presently on show at Jeanne Greenberg Rohaytan’s New York gallery, Salon 94. Glazed in earthy pigments impressed by lichen, the life-size ceramic heads are a part of an eight-piece collection sculpted in Jongerius’ distant Netherlands studio and fired in a kiln in Arnhem.
She describes wild animals as ‘silent companions’, coexisting with people however missing a voice. These open-mouthed heads mirror the anger and frustration of ignored or endangered wildlife, serving as a metaphor for the moral challenges of our time. Mixing humour and poignancy, Jongerius offers these unvoiced creatures a commanding presence.

Debuting at this exhibition, the ‘Bead Tables’ construct on her earlier ‘Frog Desk’, persevering with her exploration of the interaction between perform and sculpture.
