Sabine Marcelis’ swivelling marble seats carry London sq. to life

Sabine Marcelis unveiled a set of ten swivelling marble seats scattered throughout St Giles Sq., commissioned by London Design Pageant 2022 to carry the general public house to life. In its 20 years, London Design Pageant has made it its mission to make design accessible by dynamic installations that encourage the general public to find and work together with design.
‘The largest change previously 20 years has been the viewers: there’s been a profound change of their information and enthusiasm for design: it reinforces doing public design stuff,’ says pageant director Ben Evans. ‘However guests [to the London Design Festival] usually are not all design lovers, they’re individuals who come throughout it, and we are able to introduce a design story to them, and set off one thing.’

The comparatively new sq. sits behind the lately restored Centre Level, an area of transition, whose monochromatic, gray palette impressed Marcelis to experiment with a plethora of vibrant marbles. ‘This challenge, as with most of my work, is a celebration of supplies,’ feedback Marcelis, who in her profession has usually created putting color results with resin, glass and pure stone. ‘I needed to reply to the house by injecting a little bit of color and enjoyable into this city surroundings. Intentionally selecting a pure materials in a variety of colors, I needed to create a powerful distinction with the encompassing structure and the man-made materials palette.’
